James Brady, Anti-Gun Advocate Who Inspired the 'Brady Bill,' Dies at 73
We are heartbroken to share the news that our beloved Jim 'Bear' Brady has passed away after a series of health issues," his family said in a statement, adding they were thankful they had to opportunity to say goodbye. A spokesperson for the family shared the news.
"Jim touched the lives of so many and has been a wonderful husband, father, friend and role model," the family added, stating that they were "enormously proud" of his accomplishments.
Brady had served just 69 days in President Ronald Reagan's White House when, on March 30, 1981, John Hinckley, Jr. attempted to assassinate the president and shot Brady in the head. Brady lived with a disability from that point onward.
"I've worked very hard at forgetting as much about that as I possibly can. But I've not been unable to do it," he said at the time.
"Once you've been shot in the head, it's hard to forget."

Brady went on to become a gun control advocate, serving as chair of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, alongside his wife, Sarah.
The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, often known as the "Brady Bill" or "Brady Law," was named for the former press secretary and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1993. It requires background checks on people who buy guns from federally licensed dealers
